Robert Stuart lived from 1785-1843. He was an American explorer who emigrated to Canada to become a fur trader. Then he joined the John Jacob Astor's Astoria venture, he led the overland party East in 1812. This was the first party to have ever used the south pass and used the main route of the Oregon trail. He then joined the American Fur Company, around Mackinac was where he directed his trade. He helped a lot with the Michigan development.
